Fueling the fire of hope through literacy.

Project READ provides free literacy tutoring to adults and academically at-risk youth in Redwood City, helping them build the skills to reach their educational and career goals.

Become a Volunteer Tutor

It’s an easy and fun way to make a real difference for someone in your community.

Make a Donation

Project READ is free for all learners, thanks in part to generous donors like you.

Customized learning experiences built on decades of experience.

Named one of five “exemplary literacy programs” nationwide by the US Department of Education, Project READ creates an individual plan for each learner that grows and adapts along with them. Our programs combine one-on-one tutoring, group learning, and independent lessons in a family-centered approach designed to break the generational cycle of low literacy.

“Tutoring started out as something I did as a service requirement for school, but I loved it so much that I continued to do it even after I met my set number of hours.”

– Graduating Teen Tutor

“I feel more confident going to my kids' school and other places because I can understand what people are talking to me about.”

Food Pantry

Project READ feeds more than hungry minds.

Food insecurity presents a major obstacle to learning for many Project READ families. Through our partnership with Second Harvest of Silicon Valley, Project READ provides over 40,000 pounds of fresh produce, protein, dairy products, and packaged goods per year to the families in our learner community who are most in need.
